What every website needs—no matter your industry
There’s no one-size-fits-all website, but there are a few universal must-haves.
One question I always get is “what’s your niche?”.
I don’t have one.
I don’t believe in niching down because you ‘should’.
(side note, I don’t believe in doing anything because you ‘should’. I reject a ‘should’.)
To me, niching comes out of experience. You’ve given yourself the chance to work with lots of different people, been in situations you’ve loved, situations you’ve hated, and adapted your audience from those experiences.
That’s not to say it can’t work, but I’ve heard from a lot of entrepreneurs who niched too early in their business and regretted it.
You could argue that I have a niche since Squarespace is my platform of choice. Sure, I’ll agree with that. But I want to work with people of every industry.
I want to learn how their business works, the nuances of how they attract clients, and how they’re leaning into their superpowers in an industry.
I’ve worked with over 23 industries so far, and there are some commonalities that work on websites across all industries - because ultimately, we’re people connecting, supporting, and problem-solving for other people.
Focus on clarity over cleverness. A tagline like “Elevating Your Potential” doesn’t tell visitors what you do. Make it immediately clear how you help and why they should care.
Make it easy for people to take action. Have a button everywhere someone naturally stops, so you can guide them to the next step of their journey.
Think of your website as a central hub for all of your marketing channels, like all roads leading to Rome. Make sure all of the questions someone would have before working with you are answered.
Every industry has its quirks, but at the end of the day, a good website just needs to answer two things: Who do you help, and how can they work with you?
Quick Tip:
Your homepage should pass the 5-second test—when someone lands on your site, they should immediately know what you do, who you help, and what to do next.
Not sure if it’s clear enough? Ask a friend (or better yet, someone who doesn’t already know your business) to glance at your homepage for 5 seconds, then tell you what you do. If they hesitate or get it wrong, it’s time for an update!
